What Happens If Your NY Notary Commission Expires?

A New York notary commission lasts four years. If yours has expired or is about to, here is exactly what happens and how to fix it.

You have a six-month grace period

You can renew up to six months after your expiration date without retaking the notary exam. Renew within that window and you keep a smooth path back to an active commission.

You cannot notarize during the lapse

Important: once your commission expires, you are not authorized to notarize until your renewal is approved. Notarizing with an expired commission can invalidate documents, so pause until you are reinstated.

After six months, you start over

If more than six months pass after expiration, you are treated as a new applicant and must retake the exam and reapply from scratch. That is why renewing early matters.

Complete a new Oath of Office (DOS-2201), get it notarized, and submit it with your application and $60 fee through New York Business Express. You can get the oath form and notarize it online right away.
