An acknowledgment is the notarization where you confirm, in front of a notary, that the signature on your document is yours and that you signed it willingly. Do it by live video or at your door.

With an acknowledgment you do not swear to what the document says. You tell the notary that you signed it of your own free will. The notary checks your photo ID, completes the acknowledgment certificate and applies the seal. It is the standard notarization for deeds, powers of attorney and many contracts.

Frequently asked questions
What is an acknowledgment in notary terms?
It is a notarial act where the signer appears before the notary, is identified, and confirms that they signed the document willingly. The notary attaches a certificate that records this.
Can I get an acknowledgment notarized online in New York?
Yes, for most documents. The acknowledgment is done by live video with a New York notary. Some documents, such as wills and certain estate documents, are handled differently, so check first if you are unsure.
How much does an acknowledgment cost?
Online notarization starts at $25. You see the exact price before you pay, and there is no travel fee for online sessions.
Does the notary read my document?
No. The notary confirms who you are and that you are signing willingly. The notary does not review or explain the contents.
