Step 1: Start your renewal on New York Business Express
Since 2023, New York notary renewals are handled online through the state’s New York Business Express system and submitted to the Department of State. You complete the renewal application there.

Step 4: County clerk filing
After the Department of State approves your renewal, it forwards your commission to the county clerk where you live or work, where your signature is kept on record.
Do not miss the deadline
If you renew more than six months after your commission expires, you are treated as a new applicant and must retake the notary exam. You also cannot notarize during any lapse between expiration and approval, so renew early.
