How to Get Your Car Out of Impound (Step by Step)

The order matters here. Do these in sequence and it is a half day. Do them out of order and you will make the trip twice, paying another night of storage for the privilege.

Step 1: Confirm it was towed, and where

Before anything else, use the city’s Find Towed Vehicle tool with your plate number and state, or call 311. From outside New York City, call (212) 639-9675.

This tells you whether the vehicle was towed at all, which facility has it, and what is owed. NYPD pounds are in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens only, so a car towed in Manhattan or on Staten Island has left the borough.

Step 2: Work out which agency towed it

This determines where you go, and people lose a day getting it wrong.

Parked illegally, or no valid registration or insurance: towed by the NYPD.

More than $350 in parking or camera violations in judgment: towed by a City Marshal or the Sheriff’s Office, and handled through the Department of Finance rather than at a pound.

For a DMV offence tow you go to a Department of Finance business center with your valid driver license and the original title bearing your name, or notarized authorization from the titleholder together with their license. The vehicle will not be released without valid registration and insurance.

Step 3: Clear judgments before you travel

A vehicle will not be released while parking judgments stand against it, and judgments cannot be paid at the pound. They go to the Parking Violations Bureau.

Check what is outstanding while you are still at home. Discovering a judgment at the counter costs you the trip and another night of storage.

The ticket that caused the tow is separate again, paid or disputed through the Department of Finance within thirty days of the date on the ticket.

Step 4: Gather the documents

Step 5: Bring the right kind of payment

Pounds accept cash, certified check payable to the New York City Police Department, money orders and travelers checks, an ATM debit card drawing on checking, and Discover, American Express, Mastercard and Visa.

A card must be in the name of the person collecting the vehicle. Sending someone with your card does not work.

Step 6: Go, and go today if you can

Confirm the facility’s hours before you leave, since they differ between pounds and change. Redeeming the same day the vehicle was towed avoids the storage charge entirely, which is the biggest single saving available to you.

This is where most of the avoidable cost lives. People lose days because they are at work, out of state, or without a way to reach the Bronx.

Unclaimed NYPD vehicles eventually move to the Property Clerk and are sold through the department’s auction house. Abandoning the vehicle does not erase what is owed, and the debt does not disappear with the car.

Before you drive away

Walk the vehicle and photograph it, including wheels, bumpers and the front underside. Tow damage happens and a claim raised at the gate is far easier to pursue than one raised the next day.

Check that your property is still inside. Keep every receipt, because if you later dispute the ticket or claim damage, those documents are your file.

Then deal with the ticket

The ticket that caused the tow is separate from the tow bill. Pay or dispute it through the Department of Finance within thirty days of the date on the ticket, online, by mail or in person.

If you are disputing, photograph the signage where you parked before it changes. The sign is usually the entire argument, and a photograph taken weeks later proves nothing about the day you were towed.
