Do Apostilles Expire?

Short answer: an apostille itself does not expire. The Hague Apostille Convention puts no expiration date on the certificate. But that is not the end of the story, because the country receiving your document can still refuse it for being too old.

Why the apostille doesn’t expire

An apostille confirms one thing: that the signature, seal and title of the official on your document are genuine. That fact doesn’t change over time. A notary’s signature that was genuine in 2024 is still genuine in 2027, so the certificate stays valid.

Why your document can still be “too old”

Many receiving authorities set their own recency rule for the underlying document. Common examples:

  • Background checks are often only accepted if issued within the last 3 or 6 months.
  • Single status affidavits and certificates of no impediment for marriage abroad are frequently required to be recent, because your status could change.
  • Birth and marriage certificates are sometimes required to be issued within a set period for immigration, citizenship or marriage filings.
  • Powers of attorney may be questioned by a foreign bank or registry if they are old, even if they are legally still in force.

Some authorities count from the date the document was issued, others from the date of the apostille. That difference matters when you plan.

How to avoid getting caught

Ask the receiving office, in writing if you can, two questions: how recent does the document need to be, and recent from which date. Then work backward from your deadline. Getting a document apostilled months early because you want to be organized is exactly how people end up doing it twice.

Does an apostille expire if the notary’s commission expires?

No. The apostille verifies that the notary held a valid commission on the day of the notarization. A later expiration of that commission doesn’t undo it.

Frequently asked questions

Do apostilles expire?

No. The Hague Apostille Convention sets no expiration date for an apostille. The certificate stays valid as long as the document it is attached to is unchanged.

Why was my apostilled document rejected as too old?

The receiving authority has its own rule about how recent the underlying document must be. Background checks, single status documents and vital records often have 3 or 6 month windows.

Does an apostille become invalid if the notary commission expires?

No. The apostille confirms the notary was commissioned on the day of the notarization. A later expiration does not affect it.

Can I reuse an apostilled document for a second application?

Sometimes, if the receiving office accepts its age and you can give up the original. Most offices keep the original, so many people order two apostilled copies at once.
